Melia wins poster prize for active matter research

Congrats to undergrad Melia Kendall, for winning the prize for best undergraduate poster in condensed matter/materials physics at the National Society for Black Physicists annual meeting in Columbus, OH. Her poster “Macro and Micro: the Effects of
Active Particles on Granular Materials” reported on her experiments on mixtures of flour beetle larvae and various-sized grains, where the activity of the larvae causes the granular material to flow. If you want to hear more, she’ll also be presenting this work (with live samples!) at the Gala of Stories, Foods, and Insights from the Study of the Life in Homes on November 15.
